Chad & Zach

Hi!  We are Chad and Zach. We are a loving couple who have been married for five years. Our journey began on an online dating app, and we quickly bonded over our shared values, including our passion for caring for others, as both of us are nurses. We both sought careers that we knew would help our community.  Zach came to nursing after a couple of careers, but has quickly found his home in the emergency room.  Chad has had a long career in nursing, and is now happy working as a nurse practitioner.

After meeting in 2018, we connected deeply and realized how naturally our lives fit together. We live in a spacious home where we love caring for our two dogs, working on our garden and yard, and spending quality time with family and friends. We’re excited to share our love, our adventures, and our warm home with a child and welcome them into our family.

  • I come from a huge family. I have two siblings, but my mom has twelve, and I have thirty-three first cousins! Family gatherings can be big, loud, and chaotic—but they’re also full of love, support, and connection.
  • I grew up on a farm in southern Indiana, taking care of horses and cattle and putting up what felt like endless amounts of hay every summer.
  • My first paid job was as a ride operator at a theme park. I loved running the big coasters and keeping people safe, but my favorite shifts were always on the kids’ rides—nothing beats watching a child experience a ride for the first time and giving them a celebratory high-five at the end.
  • In college, I studied abroad in Russia, focusing on their healthcare system and how culture shapes medical care.
  • The summer after my sophomore year of college, I worked concessions on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I opened a small kiosk each morning to sell water and snacks to tourists, and getting to watch the sunrise over the canyon every day was unforgettable.
  • I sheepishly admit to being a huge Star Trek fan. I love how the series imagines a future where humanity has put aside greed and hatred, and how kindness, respect, and cooperation guide us toward something better.
  • My favorite family vacation growing up was a train trip from Carbondale, IL, to Sacramento, CA—through the Rockies—and back through the northern states. Seeing so much of the country at a young age opened my eyes to how big and diverse the world really is.
  • Even though I work in healthcare, I’m a history nerd at heart. I believe learning about our past helps us understand our present and build a better future.
  • I enjoy creative writing in my free time, especially short stories. I’m currently exploring the idea of turning one of them into a larger project—maybe a novel, a play, or even a sitcom script!
  • Zach and I are bonus dads to three children who are very important to us. My favorite time with the Lee kids every year is when they come over for Christmas dinner and open presents from me and Zach.

  • I spent several seasons working in Antarctica as a fuel specialist. Living at the South Pole was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and I still love sharing stories about what it’s like to work at the bottom of the world.
  • I grew up on a small farm in South Central Indiana, where I learned to fix machines and equipment by working alongside my dad. Those skills have stuck with me ever since.
  • I majored in archaeology in college and worked in the field for several years. One of the most fascinating experiences of my life was participating in excavations at ancient Maya burial sites in Belize. Carefully uncovering history taught me patience, attention to detail, and deep respect for the people and cultures who came before us. That time in my life shaped how I see the world — with curiosity, humility, and a strong appreciation for every person’s story.
  • I eventually found my true calling as an ER nurse, and I genuinely love it. Helping people through emergencies and being a calm presence during stressful moments is incredibly meaningful to me.
  • I’m an Eagle Scout, and scouting shaped a lot of who I am. I loved camping, learning outdoor survival skills, and spending as much time outside as possible.
  • I’m a LEGO enthusiast, and building complex LEGO sets is one of my favorite ways to relax. Several of my completed builds are proudly displayed around our home. My largest Lego build had 3,091 pieces!
  • I’m also an indoor plant lover, and I take care of a variety of ferns, succulents, flytraps, ficus, and spider plants. Tending to them is a peaceful part of my routine.
  • Every year, I grow a big vegetable and flower garden, and at the end of the season I can my own salsa and tomato sauce. It’s a tradition I look forward to every summer.
  • I’m the kind of person who enjoys figuring out how things work, so I’m often the one repairing small appliances or fixing things around the house. I love a good hands-on challenge!
  • Kids tend to feel comfortable around me. My favorite compliment ever given to me was from two of our foster children. The three of us were building with LEGOs for around an hour when one of them finally looked at me and said, “Zach, you’re like half kid and half adult.”  I paused, not knowing where this was coming from. Then, I realized it was because we were playing so well together. The four-year old, seeing the momentary confusion on my face, held up her hand and reassured, “No, it’s a good thing.”

  • I take my job as “family greeter” very seriously. Whether you’re having a good day or a hard one, I’ll be there with a wagging tail and a reminder that you’re never alone.
  • I’m gentle, patient, and very used to kids being part of my world. Loud laughs, quiet cuddles, and everything in between—I roll with it.
  • I believe routines are important… especially the ones involving walks, bedtime snuggles, and breakfast being right on time.
  • My dads call me the “house manager.” They say that since I’m a mix of blue heeler and husky, I always need a job. But my dads need constant reminding of when it’s time to go out, time to have food, and time to cuddle on the couch. They’d be lost without me!
  • I can’t wait to be a baby’s first furry friend, protector of dropped snacks, and loyal companion through every stage of growing.

  • I’m very expressive. When it’s time to eat, play, or go outside, I’ll let everyone know with my signature bark. No guessing required—I run a tight schedule.
  • I like things where they belong. If a chair or table moves without my permission, I may bark at it because… well… that seems suspicious and possibly haunted.
  • Every so often I remember that fish live in the house. When this happens, I alert my dads until they remind me the fish have been here for years and are, in fact, not a threat.
  • Despite my opinions and commentary, I’m a sweetheart who loves being part of whatever the family is doing—especially if it involves attention, reassurance, or snacks.
  • I may be loud, but I’m also loyal, funny, and full of personality. Life with me is never boring, and there’s always a little extra joy (and laughter) around when I’m nearby.
