Afia – Placement
My name is Afia. I am an adventurous, family-oriented, independent, woman who loves being an “Aunty” and can’t wait to parent a little one. I have a great support network of family and friends and live a fun and active life. Read on if I’ve peaked your interest. Can’t wait to meet you!!
As a child, I was cherished and loved unconditionally. I’d like to be the same kind of parent my parents were for me. They encouraged me to be independent and pursue my dreams. My brother and I always felt safe and loved even when we occasionally decided not to do the things our parents expected of us, ha!
I always thought I wanted marriage first, children later. One day, I realized my desire to be a mom isn’t contingent on biology or marriage. I am considered a great Aunty and Godmother, and now it is time for me to be a mom. I live a comfortable life and I feel blessed to have the means to raise a child similar to how my parents raised me. As a child I was encouraged to make new experiences and understand and appreciate other cultures.
As a single mother, I realize strong male relationships are important to raising both boys and girls. My brother, a cousin, and a couple of outstanding male friends who are experienced fathers and grandfathers are eager to get started with this commitment to my family. I’m honored to have them in my life this way. I have close-knit family and friends and your child will be surrounded with so much love. I spend summers, weekends, and other holidays with my parents, my brother and his partner, cousins, and close friends. There is a crew of children in my life ranging from just months old to age 13, with two more newborns expected soon, and not to mention a few young adults off to college and starting careers. We always have a good time together and love to be silly and laugh! Everyone is ready to welcome my child into their hearts and lives.
WHEN I AM A MOM
As a child I was raised to believe that it didn’t matter what I studied, just as long as I did my best. I lived at home, worked and attained a bachelor’s degree in international affairs. I attained master’s degrees in public administration and philanthropy after I started my career. I have a great career and I am delighted about this journey to being a mom.
As a parent it is most important that my child knows without a doubt that he/she is loved and loved unconditionally. I have a village ready to care for me and baby. I’d love to get to know you because I wonder what your deepest desires are for your child. If you are interested, we can talk about how we should stay in touch through letters, pictures and meeting in person.
Once baby arrives, I will take at least 6-8 weeks off from work. My mom will follow up with 8 more weeks at home before baby goes to daycare. Although I will work full-time, I am so fortunate to live very close to work and this affords me more time each evenings. I know some families have limited time in the evenings due to travel time to and from work. I am glad this is not the case for me. I am active and love Zumba. I have lots of energy to keep up with a busy little person!
WHAT MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS SAY ABOUT ME
They say I have a big heart and try to see the good in everything. They say I’m always positive and I like to encourage them to pursue their dreams. That’s because we are all are gifted and unique in our own wonderful way, and sometimes we all need a little side-line cheering to keep us going. And what’s life if we don’t try to fulfill our dreams?
WHAT I THINK ABOUT MYSELF
I’d like to think of myself as an adventurous and independent woman. I’m adventurous in the little things, like taking transportation in a city I visit for the first time. And, I want to skydive and deep sea dive someday. Some folks have a hang-up on the “independent” part. Being independent doesn’t mean that I want to be single, but what it does means is that I can take care of myself. Many people think that being independent also means that I am “miss-fix-it” around my house. I always think that is so funny! Trust me, if the door handle falls off or the plumbing needs attention, I waste no time in calling someone to make repairs!
MY TAKE ON LIFE
I try to stay grounded, especially when things don’t turn out the way I plan. I try to be grateful about the little things in my life. I am fortunate to have a great career but more than this, I believe I am blessed with generous family and incredible friends. This is what makes life wonderful.
My friends tell me that they like my dinner parties and they always have a good time. It’s probably because I enjoy cooking and seeing everyone have a good time. I usually throw on some music and have people dancing before the evening ends!
As Aunty to the little kiddos in my life, I have a ball on play dates going to the park, pumpkin patch, and the zoo. When it’s just the adults, movies and TV are fun weekend treats.
My weekends can be very low-key just spending quality time with friends going to a nice restaurant, movies, or walking. I treat myself to manicures and I love to shop for great deals, especially dresses and shoes. I love action films on the “big screen”, like The Fast and Furious, Avengers, and The Hunger Games. I stay home for comedies and English romance movies. I watch TV shows like Empire, Jane the Virgin, and Flash. I also love live bands, concerts, and theatre performances. If it’s out of town, I make it an extended weekend getaway.
MY HOME AND NEIGHBORHOOD
I live in a mid-size home with a large back yard tucked away from regular neighborhood traffic. My home has three spacious bedrooms, dining room, living room, kitchen and playroom. I love my neighborhood for so many reasons – it’s a great neighborhood with plenty of children, great for walking and riding bikes with many outstanding daycares, schools and parks. But most of all, I love my neighborhood for the diversity – my neighbors are Christian, Jewish, black, white, and Latino. We have a blast at our block party every year.
