JIM AND ERIN – PLACEMENT
We are Jim and Erin. We met online in 2010, bonded at Olive Garden talking about IU basketball, and got married in 2013. Jim is an English/Journalism teacher and coaches soccer and track. Erin is a Registered Nurse and also a Licensed Esthetician. We have 2 furbabies at home – Gracie and Annie – two of the funniest and most lovable dogs ever (but we aren’t biased).
Together, we enjoy live music, traveling, camping, binge watching a show, and live sports. Jim enjoys his coaching and loves to spend all day outside, perfecting dinner on the grill. Erin enjoys gardening and doing just about anything creative – she always has some sort of project going on.
After a 4 year struggle with infertility, we knew that adoption was the path to build our family. We are both so excited to finally be able to add a little one to our household, and our families are just as excited. Erin was adopted by her dad, and the two of them are very close. They are proof that a very loving relationship between parent and child does not require being blood related.
ERIN ABOUT JIM
It sounds cliche and corny, but Jim completes me. He keeps me grounded and is my voice of reason when I’m thinking with my heart and not my head. He laughs at my really terrible jokes (ask me about the pirate who walked into a bar) and at all the dog videos I find online and force him to watch. He has supported me through a career change and through our struggle with infertility. Our friends’ little kids love him, always wanting to interact with him and I first knew he’d be a good dad pretty early in our relationship when I attended a track meet and saw him with his athletes. He pushed them to succeed and supported and encouraged them all along the way, and they loved him for it. Students he last had 10 years ago still tell him how much he meant to them. I know that the attention and devotion he shows to his students/athletes will pale in comparison to the devotion he’ll have for our child.
JIM ABOUT ERIN
I often wonder how I got so lucky to have Erin in my life. Despite being at IU around the same time, our path didn’t cross until years later. I immediately was drawn to her goofy and somewhat nerdy personality. We would spend hours talking to each other about European history. She balances my love for literature with her love for art and architecture. She is the best travel partner I could have ever found. While a lot of couples spend hours on the beach for a vacation, Erin and I routinely tour museums, historical buildings, and pop culture sites. I get a one-on-one with the greatest tour guide in the world, and I can’t wait to share that experience with a daughter or son one day.
Erin has worked as a registered nurse and now as an esthetician. Every thing that she does revolves around taking care of other people. She is patient and empathetic with me when I come home from school, and I want to talk about my recent sport success or disappointment. I’ve watched her interact with my best friend’s two kids. They both immediately go to Erin whenever they see her. Her smile around those kids is the most gorgeous thing ever. I am beyond blessed to walk beside her every day.
We live in a suburb of Indianapolis in a diverse neighborhood that has playgrounds, a pool, walking trails, 3 fishing ponds, and a nature area. The school system is excellent., and there are plenty of activities nearby. We moved in 5 years ago thinking about having a family here, so have plenty of room for children. We have some good friends that moved into the neighborhood across the street from ours; they also have a fishing pond, playground, pool, and basketball court. Erin’s mom lives 15 minutes away, and Jim’s parents live about 10 minutes away.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Jim’s parents live about 10 minutes away, and his sister, niece and nephew live about 30 minutes away. We go to his parents’ place for holidays, and everyone talks Jim into grilling. Erin’s dad lives in Phoenix. He visits a few times a year, and they talk just about every day. He’s brought up how many frequent flyer miles he’ll be racking up once we have a child. Erin’s mom moved up here from Bloomington a few years ago in anticipation of grandchildren, and will spoil our child rotten. Both sets of grandparents cannot wait for a new addition to the family. One bonus with Jim’s work is that he gets plenty of breaks throughout the year, and of course summers off. Erin’s mom will be our childcare during the school year, 3 days a week, when Erin is working.
While we will not have the need for daycare, we do believe that it’s important that our child has interaction with other children their age – we have many friends nearby with very young children and babies for playdates, and plan on participating in activities in the community so our child can develop their social skills.
We both believe in the importance of education, and in experiencing and appreciating other cultures, that experiences – such as those gained through traveling – are more valuable than things. We want our child to explore the world around them, and explore their interests, and we will allow them to try out different hobbies so they can discover what they love. We want to be examples for our child to love and accept those around them, to always be kind, and how to be a good citizen of the Earth. While we may have high standards for them to reach, we promise to provide them with all the resources, support, and the unconditional love they need to reach those great heights.
OPENNESS IN ADOPTION
We believe that openness in adoption is imperative to a child’s wellbeing, and that a child cannot have too many surrounding them that love and support them. We embrace them knowing their heritage, birth family, and in you teaching them about your family and favorite traditions. We also look forward to our relationships growing along with our child.
